Harare Polytechnic Established in 1926, Harare Polytechnic is the oldest, largest serving institution in the Technical and Vocational Education System of the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development in Zimbabwe. In 1919, the late Mr George Challoner started Mechanical Engineering classes for some young men working in his firm, Hurbert Davies & Co. Seke Teachers College Seke Teachers’ College opened its doors to its first Intake of 193 Pre-service students in 1981. Of interest, is the fact that the present Belvedere Teachers’ College was born, launched and started operating from Seke Teachers’ College grounds in 1982 before relocating to its present site. This was followed by the official opening of Seke Teachers’ College by the then Prime Minister (Cde Robert Gabriel Mugabe) of the newly Independent Zimbabwe on 25 June 1983. In the same year (1983) the college had 193 third year students, 195 second year students, 376 first year students, 40 doing Pre-school education courses and 100 mature students on the Professional In-service course. |

United College of Education United College of Education is located in the second largest city of Zimbabwe, Bulawayo, along the Old Victoria Falls Road. The campus with its unique buildings is nestled on the western edge of the city, six kilometres from the city centre. It occupies a tranquil site far from the sounds and activities of the city. The college was founded in 1968 after a realization that the small rural training schools which were run by the churches were grossly incapacitated in terms of resources, facilities and infrastructure to effectively develop a student to become a teacher. The churches which amalgamated in this dream were: Methodist, Church of Christ, Anglican Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church. Gwanda State University
Gwanda State University is the brainchild of the government of Zimbabwe, created to fulfill the government policy to have a state university in each province. In 2006 the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development appointed a Foundation committee for the Establishment of a State University in Matabeleland South Province. The University is located at a disused mine in Filabusi. However the main campus would be developed on a 87hectare piece of land in Gwanda Town. The university will initial focus on Mining and Agriculture. However other programs shall follow. |

Midlands State University The idea of a University in the Midlands dates back to the foundation of the National University of Science and Technology when Gweru, which was identified as a possible site for a second university campus in the country, lost its bid to Bulawayo.[2] Two other opportunities to host institutions of higher learning (the Zimbabwe Open University and the Catholic University) were also missed by the Midlands Province, when the two universities went to Harare instead. |
